Why meet with a preaching consultant?

When I was a solo pastor, I was the only regular preacher at my church. Week in and week out, I was preparing sermons and preaching them. I didn’t hate the work of preaching - in fact, I loved it. But the cycle was relentless. And in busy seasons, the work became more taxing. I sometimes wondered: What fresh words or ideas can I possibly offer now?
In 2017, I began a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching program, and met regularly with a “sermon team.” This was a small group of parishioners committed to helping me become a better preacher. One of my tasks in working with this group was to help them become better listeners.
Over the three years of my academic program, I worked with groups in three different congregations. In each group, there were people who told me how much they appreciated being brought inside on how my sermons are prepared, and hearing about the task of preaching itself - its joys, challenges, and peculiarities.
For me, the collaboration that went into this work was invigorating. These people became partners in a very important part of my ministry: proclaiming the gospel faithfully, but also in ways that make sense to the people sitting “out there.”
So - to my question: why meet with a preaching consultant?
Maybe you’re a seasoned preacher - you’ve been preaching for years, maybe even in the same church.
Or maybe you’re a newer preacher - you’re just starting out and still unsure of your voice.
Or maybe you’re somewhere in between.
Whatever the case, you might find a “preaching partner” helpful - someone to listen to and observe your preaching and offer you some focused feedback.
Enter Wholly Preaching.
As a partner with you in your preaching ministry, I will offer feedback that is focused on your learning goals. I’ll ask you to consider some questions, such as: how do I want to grow in my preaching ministry? Or even: how is God calling me to grow in my preaching ministry?
We can begin with an Introductory session: free of charge, and a place to see if we’re a good fit.
Next is a Preaching Consultation. We’ll meet so that I can learn what your learning goals are. Then, I’ll watch one or two of your sermons online, and we’ll meet again so I can give you tailored feedback.
I’m also happy to enter into a longer-term Preaching Partnership with you. We’ll meet regularly with longer-term goals that we will formulate and work on together.
If you’re intrigued, book an Intro session and let’s see where it takes you!
In peace,
Kathi
